FAQ

Everything you need to know about backup power, saving on your bill, and earning from the Texas grid.

Questions homeowners ask

Why add a battery to my home?

Outages are only getting more common, and most of the damage happens close to home: downed lines and blown transformers on the distribution network, not the transmission grid. There’s far more of that infrastructure to harden, and it’s slow, expensive work. About 1 in 4 households nationwide, 33.9 million, went without power at least once in the year before the 2023 American Housing Survey. When the power goes out, so does your refrigerator: the FDA says refrigerated food is unsafe after 4 hours, and the CDC says to toss refrigerated medication after a day. Add in a hotel room or missed work, and a single outage gets expensive fast.

Texas is also adding solar faster than any other state, which is reshaping when power is cheap. ERCOT has about 52 GW of solar today against 56 GW of gas; by 2035 solar pulls ahead, near 64 GW to 61 GW. That’s great at noon and a problem after dark, since gas has to pick up the slack once the sun sets, and gas isn’t free. A battery stores the cheap midday power and uses it through the expensive evening and overnight hours.

On top of that daily swing, overall demand on the grid keeps climbing too, from population growth, EVs, and new industrial and data center load. That pushes peak prices up further, year after year.

Why not just put solar panels on my roof?

Rooftop solar competes with exactly the power that is already cheapest. Utility-scale solar farms track the sun, face it directly, and run at more than double the efficiency of a panel bolted to a roof that may face the wrong direction or sit in shade part of the day. Add in the cost of cleaning and servicing rooftop panels, the risk of roof leaks from a bad install, and the bump in your home insurance, and the economics get harder to justify.

Because wholesale prices are already low during the exact hours your roof would be generating, home solar mostly saves you money competing with power that is nearly free anyway. A battery does the opposite. It buys power when it is cheap and uses it when prices, and value, are highest.

ERCOT generation capacity by fuel typeSolar capacity grows 58%, from about 52 GW in 2027 to 82 GW by 2040, the fastest-growing source in the mix along with battery storage.
Why not just go with Base Power?

Base Power’s model works by taking over your battery, not by selling you one. In Texas, a battery that can run at full output for about four hours makes strong economic sense: charge during cheap daytime hours, discharge during expensive evenings.

ERCOT’s battery fleet is expected to grow from about 27 GW to 33 GW by 2035 on the strength of that math, and businesses that build standalone battery projects can see returns above 15%. But those businesses have to buy land, secure environmental permits, run grid studies, and arrange their own interconnection. That is expensive and slow.

Base Power’s answer was to use your land and your grid connection instead. They own the battery, keep control of when it charges and discharges, charge you an upfront installation fee, and pass you a flat, average retail rate while they keep the trading profit.

We think the upside should be yours. Buy your system outright, or finance it on a monthly plan that fits your budget, and the savings and earnings it generates belong to you.

Are these batteries safe?

Battery chemistry has come a long way. We use LiFePO4, lithium iron phosphate cells, chosen across the industry specifically because it is thermally stable. It is a different chemistry from the nickel cobalt aluminum cells in early Tesla EVs that you may have read about catching fire.

LFP is widely considered the safest lithium-ion chemistry available today, and our systems are engineered to UL 1973 and UL 9540 safety standards, the industry benchmark for battery and energy storage safety. You can read more about lithium-ion safety at Battery University.

Getting started

What does 3 Ring Power do?

We’re building a home battery system for Texas homeowners that does three jobs. It backs up your home when the grid goes down, it lowers your bill by charging when power is cheap and running your home when it’s expensive, and it can earn money by selling power back to the grid when ERCOT prices spike.

Where is 3 Ring Power available?

We’re based in Houston and starting with Texas homeowners on the ERCOT grid. Join the waitlist with your ZIP code and we’ll let you know as soon as we’re ready in your area.

How much does it cost?

Price depends on your home, how much backup you want, and your energy usage. Send us a recent electric bill and we’ll recommend a system and estimate what it could save you. There’s no cost or commitment for the estimate.

Backup

Will the battery power my whole home during an outage?

That depends on how the system is sized and what you want covered. Every installation keeps your essentials running, such as the refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, and outlets. Larger systems can also cover central air conditioning and other big loads. We’ll recommend a setup based on your home and your usage.

How is a home battery different from a generator?

A generator only helps during an outage, and it needs fuel, maintenance, and space outdoors. It also makes noise. A battery switches over automatically and silently, with no fuel to store. On the other 364 days a year, it keeps working for you by cutting your electricity costs and earning from the grid.

How long will the battery last during an outage?

Runtime depends on the size of your system and how much power your home draws. Running only essentials stretches the battery much further than running the whole house. When we review your bill, we’ll estimate backup runtime for your home specifically.

Savings

How does the battery save me money?

Electricity costs change throughout the day. In Texas, wholesale power is usually cheapest around midday and most expensive in the evening. Your battery charges during the cheap hours and runs your home through the expensive ones. How much you save depends on your electricity plan and usage, which is why we start by reviewing your bill.

Do I need solar panels?

No. The battery charges from the grid when prices are low, so it works without solar. If you already have solar or plan to add it, the battery can store that energy too.

Grid

How can my battery earn money from the Texas grid?

When demand on the ERCOT grid spikes, power becomes very expensive and the grid needs extra supply. Your battery can send stored energy back during those moments and you get paid for it. Participation runs through programs offered with electricity providers, and availability depends on where you live and your provider. We’ll walk you through the options for your address.

Will selling power to the grid leave me without backup?

No. You choose a backup reserve that is always kept for your home. The battery only sells energy above that reserve, so you stay protected if the grid goes down.
